Are You a People Person?

I saw a quote recently that said, “I used to be a people person, but people ruined it for me.” Although funny at first, I realized that it was quite sad. I know far too many people like this and it’s disappointing to me every time I hear it.

Are you a people person? Do you play well with others? If not, you need to. It will only make you happier and we can all afford to be happier.

This has been on my mind as of late. Through this past year, I’ve been hanging out with a group of friends. Like, a lot. So much so that they’ve honestly become like family. Everything from the dads enjoying a guy’s night out, to all the kids almost growing up together. We all go on walks together and just hang out at each other’s houses. We all just have a good time together.

As you age, you’re going to have these kinds of relationships that I’m experiencing now. And to be honest, it’s what life’s all about. Building those relationships that truly matter as it’s the one thing money can’t buy.

Now, this doesn’t mean you need to be a ‘people pleaser’. Far from it. You will never get anywhere in life if you’re trying to satisfy everyone you come into contact with. As someone who enjoys seeing others happy, the best way to enjoy life is by not being a ‘people pleaser’.

I’ve learned this is the secret to doing business too. The ones who are crushing it in the business world, are the ones who invest in people. They focus their entire mission around them. There’s sort of a dual meaning here so I’ll show you what I mean.

The first is networking. You don’t know who you can serve until you know who’s out there. The more people you know, the more opportunities you have to serve them. In turn, the more people you know in your network, the more people trust you and would refer you to others if they think you could help them. This is the best marketing strategy out there. When you have that reputation to have others do your marketing for you and refer you to the masses that don’t know you already. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, check out these referral statistics.

This leads into the second which is customer service. Look at any of the top companies out there and chances are they got there because of their superb customer service. It should go without saying but without customers, you don’t have a business. Why wouldn’t you try and take care of them each and every way you can? Nurturing your customers is what builds up that trust and reputation we just talked about. And you guessed it, leads right back into those referrals I just mentioned.

Good businesses will take care of their customers before, during and after the sale. Yes, I said AFTER too. This aspect gets so overlooked by companies and it’s costing them those referrals. It’s nice to maybe check up on your customers to see how they’re doing or if they need any further assistance. This can happen months, even years, after you’ve serviced them. Building up your customer list, builds up your network, which builds up your reputation, which builds your success.

If you want to be successful in business, and even just life in general, you’ll treasure these relationships. You’ll become a people person. You’ll get out there and meet someone new today.

If you have these kinds of relationships already, whether personal or professional, hold on to them tight. Cherish every single one. There’s nothing more important in the world than a support team that’s behind you every step of the way.
