I am all for positivity. If you know me, I probably have told you a joke or two, or you’ve seen me smiling every time you see me. I try to lift people up whenever I can to inspire them to do great things.
And as of late, I’ve been learning more and more about social media. It truly is remarkable to see the entire globe together in one place. I’ve been learning how to do marketing for small businesses and it’s the perfect place to do it. I’m marketing for those in my community to help bring more traffic for them. What I’ve found is that, while there are a lot of people on social media, there still are a lot that aren’t.
I really can’t blame them. They have their reasons and arguably the biggest one is the negativity surrounding it. We’ve all heard about it too, and it’s hard to argue that. From immature kids doing stupid things, to all the fearmongering newscasts, there certainly is a lot of negativity out there.
However, there is a lot of positivity out there as well. It simply gets swallowed up but the negative aspects because people like negativity more. As Winston Churchill once said, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” We seem to be attracted more to the negative side but when you actually take a look though, there is quite a bit of positivity too.
Here I’d like to show you a few ways social media can not only be a positive thing, but also how we can use it for good.
Global Connection
The world has never seen anything like it. With just a couple clicks, I could be talking to someone, not just on the opposite side of the country, but on the opposite side of the globe. You can now make friends now with just about anyone in the world.
I have been able to meet some incredible people through social media these past few years. Some of them I’ve actually become good friends with. And I intend to make many more. This couldn’t have happened even fifty years ago. Try and meet someone new today!
Local Community
This kind of goes along with the first point, but on a much smaller scale. Instead of seeing what’s happening around the world, some people just want to know what’s going on in their own backyard. Social media allows you to keep up with what’s going on there, too.
It can allow you to find a nice restaurant in the area for date night. A place where you can take your kids for them to burn off a little energy. Or just look up times for a movie you want to see. You can even find others to go with you in a group where people like the same things as you do. Building that community is important to help us stay positive. A lot of social media platforms are now giving more attention to them.
Business
This leads into the other side of the coin in the local community. If you’re the businesses that people are looking for, this is a great way to market and advertise your business to get your name out there. Anyone from the big chains to the mom and pop stores, can use these platforms to do their advertising.
This is where marketers like me come in. We can help those businesses market their company and find new customers. So many people are already using so much time on social media, it’s a great way to get those new eyes on you. This is actually a great way for churches to evangelize as well too.
Alerts
For my last example, we may have to turn to the negative. However, there is a positive way to look at it. If something bad does happen, like a crime or disaster, social media is a great way to keep your local community informed of the situation.
I have heard stories of something like a storm hitting an area. Social media can help you alert others in trouble to tell them where to find supplies and aid. It’s important not to start gossiping but this can be a relief to you if you’re ever in that situation.
These are just a few ways we can use social media for good. Let us practice these and try and drown out any negativity out there.
